Conclusion of flashforward

Films: Sherlock Holmes 1, Sherlock Holmes 2, Malena, Flashforward TV series(1-4).

I have watched these films mainly about flashforward, but not as many as flashback films because these flashforward films are not easy to find. So from these films above I have some ideas about flashforward.

A kind of flashforward is only used for predicting what will be happened immediately, like in Sherlock Holmes 1, Sherlock shows how he can fight the guy first before he fight.

Another flashforward is used for predicting what will be happened next and analysing its both positive and negative sphere, just like in the end of Sherlock Holmes 2, two men are likely to fight together, before their fight, Sherlock begins to think about how to fight him and analyse the result of win or lost.

The third kind of flashforward is used for making comparison between reality and imagination. Such as Malena, the young boy always following the lady wherever she goes, once the lady gets closer to him, he imagines that he is kissing with the lady even making love with her, but back to reality, the lady just walk-passed him. Every flashforward in this film are in similar ways. Back to the end of Sherlock Holems 2, when Sherlock finished thinking and analysing, Watson came into the room, after that, Sherlock pushed the man out of the balcony and dropped into the waterfall, and he also suffered. So all of Sherlock's thinking and analysis are totally different from the result.

In a tv series called Flashforward, flashforward shots, which are simply brought by people's words, are displaying what they have seen in that period of sleeping, during their sleep, the time flashforward to Apr 29, 2010 from 6 months ago. So all the series are talking about what they had seen during their sleep, and they are trying to find out how to avoid something will be happened in that day.

Analysis of the end of Sherlock Holmes

As for the end of Sherlock Holmes 2, there are two flashforward shots used. The first one is in 114min 35sec, the shot flashforward to Sherlock Holmes is fighting with the man who want to kill Watson and him, and Sherlock wins the fighting by strongly hit the man's face. The flashforward shot begins with Sherlock's voice and the actions are made in slow-motion. The second one is in 115min 01sec, the flashforward shot showes us that Sherlock Holmes loses the fighting and he is pushed out of the balcony by the man and than he falls into the waterfall. This flashforward also begins with Sherlock's voice of explaining how to fight the man, and the actions still in slow-motion. These flashforward shots are the positive and negative predictions of Sherlock Holmes himself. But what happened in the end is totally different from his prediction, the two men falls in to the waterfall together. It's a great comparison of the thing happened and the prediction.

As for the end of Sherlock Holmes 1, the short flashforward shot used as well. The flashforward shots are brought by the words, the first one is the sergeant was killed in the sewage, another one is about the Blackwood's device.

Both of the end of films are flashforward shots, but in the first film, the flashforward shots are used for predicting the things had happened before and analysing; the flashforward shots in the second film are used for predicting what will be happened next and analysing then comparing.

Comments of Malena

Tonight I have watched an Italian romantic film named Malena, which was directed by Monica Bellucci in 2000. There are two main characters in this film, one is the young boy, another one is the lady that much elder than the young boy. The lady lost her husband in the earlier years because of the war, so the life of her is much worse than before. And she is heaten and fighted by other women at last because she is a prostitute and she seduces other women's husbands. From the beginning to the last, the young boy crushes the elder lady and he follows her by bicycle, even he steals her washed underwear so as to masturbates by imaging he is making love with Malena.

As for the film, many flashforward are used, everytime the young boy see Malena, the shot changes to the boy is kissing the lady even doing sex with her. But after that, instead of this kind of shot is the young boy is watching the lady who is doing the housework far from her house. In my opinion, a good comparison between imagination and reality is displayed by the film because of using the flashforward. It shows that the young boy loves the lady so much but he still remains in fantasy and imagination, maybe one-sided love is better. In 66min 48sec, the young boy tries to get closer to the lady but failed, the lady only walks passed-by. In 103min 20sec, it is the first time that the young boy talked to the lady and touched her hand lightly. Comparing to his imagination, it maybe a great contrast, and this maybe the opinion of mine that why flashforward shots are greatly used in this film. In my opinion, this is a great example of flashforward film.

Conclusion of flashback

Film I have watched: American Beauty, Walkabout, The diving bell and the butterfly, Sherlock Holmes, Scott Pilgrim, Memento, Sherlock Holmes(film), Pulp fiction, Across the Hall, Citizen Kane, God and monsters,.... (still watching).

From these films I have get a conclusion about flashback below.

Some flashbacks are used at the end of the films, to the narrative, it gives a briefly conclusion of the main character's life ,memories and etc. Like the film American Beauty (1999), when the dad was killed by his neighbour, the film begin to flashback, totally flashbacked for 3 times, introduced the reflection of the main character's wife, daughter and daughter's friend who have heard the sound of gunshot. When introduced one person, the film flashbacked the life of this person with the main character in early days. In the meanwhile, voice-over is used during the flashback, the main character memorizing his life and making conclusion in his words. The film Walkabout (1971), the end of the film is the only flashback of the film, when the little boy threw stones, the flim begin to flashback to the life of a city, so as to compare the original life and the city life. To the plot of the film, voice-over is used for the main character to memorize and conclude the period time of adventure, it's a way of giving a conclusion of the film. Maybe this voice is from the little boy who had been grown up.

Another kind of flashback is used in the middle of the film, which gives the important backstories to audiences before introducing the event which will be happened to the main character next. And the flashback pushes the development of the plot. In the film The diving bell and the butterfly (2007), the author uses flashback to remember the main character's normal life before he got the illness and disabled. In the film Gods and monster (1998), flashbacks were used to memorize the scene that the main character (the hollywood director) was directing films, fighting in the war with his army. The flashback gives audiences the background information that the main character got an illness that a person always remember the things happened before.

This kind of flashback is used for remembering what happened by following a main story line, so as to solving the confusion and working out the suspense. To the plot, these flashbacks are used to show what had happened to the main character, like Memento, Across the hall and Pulp fiction.

Comments of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a comedy film with nonlinear narrative.

In 10min 6sec, There is a flashforward used in the film, when Scott brought his high-schooler girlfriend to the door, the shot changed to a endless snowfield and he felt alone there. The flashforward began with the brighter sun and finished with they were getting up, during the flashforward, the voice was dealed with surrounding effects. The effect of flashforward to the film is drawing the foreshadowing, because at the end of the film the shot appeared again.

In 96min 25sec, Scott was killed by a man who is the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend. After that the shot changed to a endless snowfield, this shot is a coordination of the flashforward shot in 10 min 6sec, because it is a foreshadowing of that.
